A basic shirt that works equally well
on and off the trails.
This shirt uses a material made of bamboo fibers blended with polyester. It has great humidity-absorbing and deodorizing qualities similar to those of wool, making it smooth but tough at the same time. Highly windproof it’s a perfect mountain shirt that can take a little rough handling but also look smart when needed.
If it’s hot, roll up the sleeves. If it’s cold, put it on quickly and it will help to keep you warm. It’s a simple, durable shirt that will fit right into your wardrobe although it’s so comfortable that you’ll probably be wearing it every day and never find a reason to hang it up.
This special fabric will look different depending on the lighting. Especially, the Dried Grass, a fading green color, looks olive or khaki, or somewhere between them.

As I get older, I find myself wearing shirts more often when I’m at home. That got me thinking. Why not make a really great mountain shirt?
The right choice of clothing for the ultralight hiker might be a base layer of Merino wool with an ultralight wind shell or a breathable rain shell with good ventilation. However, it is boring to go to the mountains with the same outfit every time, and I think you should have some freedom when going on a hike.
When I started thinking about what kind of shirts I wanted to wear in the mountains, I did not want to wear something inferior and less comfortable than the Merino wool base layer that I had grown used to for its functionality and safety.
A 100% synthetic fiber shirt would be hot and it would make me smell, so obviously that wouldn’t work. I also did not like the over-designed shirts from most other outdoor brands.
I started testing various designs and materials, including Merino wool, a couple of years ago. After more than ten prototypes I finally had something flexible enough to wear while hiking.
Unlike cut-and-sew fabric, shirts are made of woven fabric, giving them superior wind resistance and durability. If you choose a slightly larger size, air will circulate inside the shirt, making it easier to get rid of your body heat while moving. If you are still hot, you can unbutton the whole shirt to let the heat out, thus shirts are easier to use in terms of temperature control. You can also flip up the collar to protect yourself from ultraviolet rays from the sun or a strong gust of wind.
As for the material, the 100% Merino wool shirt, which was my favorite at first, was extremely comfortable as expected. However, at 200g/m2 the Merino we used was quite heavy. It was okay from autumn to winter, but it felt too hot in the summer. Since I love wool, I was strongly leaning toward just going ahead with this fabric anyway, but deep down, I kept wondering if there might not be a different fabric available…
I then came across a blend of bamboo and polyester. It regulates humidity much like wool and also offers great protection against ultraviolet rays. At around 120g/m2 it’s half the weight of Merino wool and is rather tough considering its weight. It’s also soft to the touch and less expensive than wool.
At the same time, we were working on the UL Short Sleeve Shirt using Pertex Quantum Air, but this bamboo/polyester blend also seemed to offer something worth further exploration.
The UL Shirt is superior in terms of lightness and fast-drying properties, but it is not necessarily better when it comes to durability. It also does not absorb much sweat since the material is so thin, so will feel chilly if exposed to wind or rain.
On the other hand, the Bamboo Shirt is durable, protects against ultraviolet rays, and has natural deodorizing properties, making it closer to the initial idea I had for a mountain shirt. This shirt can be worn casually just like T-shirts but also looks smart when you want to dress up a little.
Before releasing we made a couple of small adjustments as the added single button to keep the collar up for wind production. I finally thought we were now ready to launch our line of Yamatomichi hiking shirts.
Form and Function
Bamboo fibers absorb the discomforting heat and the accumulating humidity, while polyester has excellent fast-drying properties and durability. This 50/50 blend brings the best of both worlds for a tough and comfortable piece of fabric.
High deodorizing properties
Bamboo polyester has been confirmed to have more than double the deodorizing properties that deodorized synthetic fibers have.
Natural UV protection (UPF50+)
This bamboo polyester material has a natural UV protection of UPF50+, keeping you well protected against ultraviolet rays when on the move.
Turn the collar up to warm up your neck
On a chilly morning or late evening, turn up your collar and secure it with the added button to keep out the chill. A turned-up collar also helps to prevent your neck from getting sunburned when the sun is up.
Wrinkle-resistant, cool material
The 50/50 bamboo/polyester blend has a unique cool, silky texture that doesn’t wrinkle easily even if stuffed somewhere in your backpack. The polyester also adds a nice glossy shine to the fabric making you stand out on the trail.
Form follows function
We wanted to make a simple shirt easy to use and with great ventilation. The unique bamboo/polyester blend is more windproof and dries faster than most other shirt cut-and-sew fabrics. We chose snap buttons to make the buttoning and unbuttoning as fast and easy as possible. The cut is wide to allow for ample ventilation.
We decided on an open-necked turndown collar without a neckband to avoid trapping heat around your neck when moving, while still allowing you to turn up your collar and secure it in the cold, making this shirt work in a wide range of temperatures.
Bamboo, a natural fiber, has excellent humidity absorbency, deodorizing properties, and block-out ultraviolet rays on par with wool. It’s weakness is that it is not that strong. Blending it with polyester, which has excellent durability and fast-drying properties, helped us achieve a material that can withstand rough handling when hiking and is comfortable to wear.
The bamboo fibers have a light, durable, and flexible feel. Traditionally bamboo has been widely used in Asia in a variety of products from food packaging to woven goods. Bamboo also grows extremely fast and can be harvested after only 2-3 years so is a very environmentally sound material.
