Introduction

Ultralight Mittens Born from Surplus Fabric

The UL Rain Hoody and UL All-weather Hoody were made of an ample amount of fabric to minimize the stitches, resulting in large sheets of surplus fabric. The UL Mittens were born out of an idea to reuse this surplus fabric that was too good to throw away.

The UL Mittens are ultralight with only 20g in weight (Pertex Shield). They are highly waterproof and windproof, although not completely water-resistant* since the stitches are not sealed, will serve you as functional rain mittens or wind-protection gloves.

The UL Mittens use the 2020 version UL Rain Hoody’s surplus fabrics, with a wide selection of colors to choose from, and we have kept the price as low as possible.

This season’s mittens are made of either hydrophilic non-porous Pertex Shield or hydrophobic porous Pertex Shield Pro. Both of them are polyurethane-based, but the former is lighter while the latter has a good balance of moisture-permeability, waterproofness, and lightness. The next season’s mittens will adopt the Pertex Shield Air, the surplus fabric of the latest UL All-weather Hoody.

*For seam sealing instructions, please refer to the “SUPPORT” page.

In situations where you might often use your hands, such as on ladders or rocky ridges, it is recommended to use the UL Mittens with an inner glove. They are so light and thin that, if worn alone, the water may penetrate the fabric.

Material

Two different types of Materials

The UL Mittens are made of either Pertex Shield Pro or Pertex Shield. Both are three-layer, waterproof and breathable fabrics, but the structure of the membrane, characteristics, and moisture permeation mechanisms are completely different.

Pertex Shield Pro

  • Blue
  • Red
  • Deep Forest
  • Navy

Rip-stop fabric with a square grid on the surface. The color of the lining is almost white.

The Pertex Shield Pro is a polyurethane-based hydrophobic and microporous membrane. The “hydrophobic” material has high water repellency, and the “microporous” means that it has a number of very small holes (pores).

These pores are too small for liquid water (rain) to enter, but large enough for vapor (moisture from your body) to leave. Pertex Shield Pro effectively vents the moisture within the clothes from the pores, achieving superior breathability.

According to our test at our Yamatomichi Lab, Pertex Shield Pro prevents excessive temperature rise even during heavy exercise, while keeping a constant temperature when it rapidly gets cold. According to the information provided by the manufacturer, the Pro version is more durable than the regular Pertex Shield.

Pertex Shield

  • Ebony
  • Nomad

The Pertex Shield uses a polyurethane-based hydrophilic and non-porous membrane. Though the membrane has no holes or pores, it has a strong affinity to water, making it great at absorbing moisture from the inside.

In other words, the membrane absorbs the moisture within the jacket and then allows it to evaporate. It works like a towel that absorbs water, and then dries by itself.

The greatest advantage of Pertex Shield is its lightweight: The membrane is non-porous, so the fabric can be extremely thin and light. Our experiment has shown that it quickly lowers the humidity within the clothes immediately after being worn, but the humidity will gradually increase after a while. For this reason, you may feel more stuffy compared to the Pertex Shield Pro.

Instructions

  • Not completely waterproof.
  • The UL Mittens is made of our ultralight water-resistant, ultrathin, water-permeable fabric. Please handle with care as it can be torn or ripped when rubbed against rocks or poked by branches.
  • The UL Mittens are comfortable when you are on the move in a relatively warm environment. However, it is less warm than normal gloves so we strongly recommend you wear wool inner gloves to keep you warm especially when severe weather is to be expected.
  • In order to maximize the moisture-permeability of the two materials, after-use care is necessary. The performances of the membrane, facing and lining can be impaired by dirt, sweat, and skin oils, or other substances. Please follow the washing instructions of each product to properly wash, dry, and keep clean. The use of rainwear-specific detergent is highly recommended.
  • The water-permeability is hindered as the water repellency is declined. The water repellency can be restored by applying the heat of a tumble dryer in low-temperature or a hairdryer. Use of a water repellent agent is recommended if it is not restored by the heat of the dryer.
  • The Pertex Shield Pro uses ultralight and thin microporous material. Vaseline, insect repellent, and ethanol-containing substances such as hair creams, cosmetics and sunscreens may stain the fabric. They may also hinder the water-permeability of the fabric. Seam Sealing

The UL Mittens are made of a waterproof material. However, to make your Mittens fully waterproof, the seams must be sealed by yourself.
