With our 5-Pocket Shorts, we believe we have made the ultimate pair of hiking shorts.
Not only are they extremely comfortable, but they are fast-drying, light, and comes with our unique 5-pocket system that will conveniently store your smartphone, map, pocketknife, etc., without interfering with your leg movement.
First released in 2013, these shorts marked the beginning of outdoor clothing for Yamatomichi.

Feel the breeze
In Japan, the common view is that shorts are not suitable for mountain hiking. But during the snow-free months from spring to fall, I hike in shorts whenever I can.
That concern isn’t unfounded. Compared to long pants, shorts leave your legs more exposed if you fall or brush against rocks or trees. But that’s only one side of the trade-off. Shorts are easier to move in, keep your legs from overheating, and simply feel better in warm conditions. For me, that comfort is hard to give up.

In the mountains, there is no such thing as absolute safety. Each person has to decide for themselves how to balance risk, comfort, and freedom of movement. As for me, when I’m hiking in hot weather, I want to feel the breeze on my legs.
That’s why I had wanted to make these shorts ever since starting Yamatomichi. There were already plenty of minimal, lightweight shorts for trail running, but we couldn’t find a pair that was truly built for hiking and still easy to wear in everyday life. What we wanted was simple: lightweight, quick-drying shorts that move well, work well, and feel natural both in the mountains and in town.
Just as important was the pocket design. We wanted shorts that could carry a smartphone cleanly and securely, along with the other things hikers actually use. Phones have become essential in the mountains, but in most lightweight shorts they swing around when you walk, and if you put them in a back pocket, they get in the way when you sit down.
After two years of testing and pattern revisions, we finally arrived at the shape we were after. The five pockets each have a clear purpose, with dedicated space for a map, wallet, and smartphone. They’re easy to use, comfortable to hike in, and practical enough that we eventually made a long-pants version too.
Form and function
Pockets for smartphone and maps
Yamatomichi 5-Pocket design can neatly store your map, snack, wallet, and other items you need during hiking, without interfering with your leg movement.
Especially, our smartphone pocket at the side is so well-positioned that it fits your phone while keeping it securely in place without bouncing around when running. The map pocket is large enough to store the water bottle.
1st & 4th pockets
Side pockets designed for easy hand access. The bottom of the pockets uses polyester mesh so water can escape.
2nd pocket
Sized to fit most standard smartphones. Positioned behind the hip bone so it doesn’t interfere with leg movement, stays stable while running, and sits in just the right spot so you won’t end up sitting on your phone.
3rd pocket
Placed slightly higher with a long zipper pull for easy opening and closing—ideal for carrying a wallet and other small valuables.
Key Loop
A longer loop for attaching a mini carabiner or hanging the pants on a hook.
5th pocket
Sized to fit a standard hiking map perfectly, while also accommodating a large-screen smartphone, a compact digital camera, or even a plastic bottle.
Fast-drying and durable
In the pouring rain, even water-repellent finished clothes will unavoidably get wet. Also, even the highest-spec rainwear gets soaked from the moisture caused by sweat during intense exercise. Hence, what we prioritize is how fast the fabric can dry after getting wet, rather than making a lot of effort to keep them completely dry.
Generally, the thinner the fabric, the faster it dries. It is true that fast-drying property matters for hiking, but at the same time, a certain level of durability and strength are required.
The cotton-like Taslan with 120g/㎡, the material used for the Shorts, is lightweight, fast-dry, and durable.
15 mins of spin dry
We compared the moisture retention of the 5-Pocket Shorts / Pants with synthetic base layers and lightweight cotton shirts after 15 minutes of spin-drying. Lower values indicate faster drying, and at just 1.0%, they are nearly dry at that point.
5-Pocket lineup
At Yamatomichi, we offer three series of bottoms for the spring, summer, and fall seasons. The original, durable lineup includes the 5-Pocket Pants, Wide Pants, Shorts, and Long Shorts. For those prioritizing lightness and breathability, we offer the Light 5-Pocket Pants, Wide Pants, Shorts, and Short Shorts. Bridging the two is the DW 5-Pocket Pants and Shorts, offering a balanced set of characteristics.
Material
Cotton-like Taslan Nylon
The Taslan nylon fabric is made of “air-textured yarns”, the filament yarns using compressed air.
Unlike the general nylon fabrics, which are often shiny, the Taslan nylon has a matte and soft texture. It is a high-density material made of “air-textured yarns”, achieving both durability and lightweight.
The nylon material is fast-dry and its unique uneven texture keeps you comfortable in various conditions without sticking to your wet skin.

- Tumble dry below 60°C.
- Do not bleach and do not use fabric softener.
- Iron on low without steam.

- We cannot ship multiple orders in one package due to how our delivery system is currently set up.
- We will ship to regions in North America, Oceania, and Europe via DHL. For regions in Asia, the Middle East, Central and South America, Africa, we use EMS (International Express Mail Service) for shipping. We currently cannot ship to Russia due to Japanese postal regulations.

Choosing the right size online can be difficult. To make your purchase easier, Yamatomichi offers a size exchange program for eligible items. To request a size exchange, please use our size exchange form here. Please review the conditions below before submitting your request.
- We only accept exchanges when the item is unused (except for fitting).
- If you would like to exchange your item for a different size, please contact us within seven days of receiving your order.
- Exchanges are available only for the same color in a different size.
- If your preferred size is out of stock, we may suggest a different color instead.
- If the product is no longer available, we may need to return the original item to you.
- All shipping costs are the responsibility of the customer.
- We will send the exchanged item after receiving payment for the return shipping cost via PayPal.
- Please note that some countries may charge customs duties depending on the value of the item.
- We are unable to advise on local customs regulations. Please contact your local customs office directly.

At Yamatomichi, we’re happy to help extend the life of your gear. We offer repairs for all of our products — whether it’s a hole, broken parts, or wear and tear from years of use.
