COMMUNITY

Yamatomichi HLC is a community that shares the joy of ultralight hiking, pursues its possibilities, and builds its culture.

Activities are carried out at eight locations, including seven across Japan and one in Taiwan, with each area managed by local ambassadors. Various programs are conducted to build richer connections between hiking, life, and community.

Director's Letter
2025.10.18
Ultralight hiking is about moving through nature with freedom and comfort, carrying only what you truly need. By keeping your gear minimal and lightweight, you open yourself to a deeper connection with the trail, your surroundings, and yourself.

The best way to enjoy ultralight hiking is simply to get out and hike. Yet learning about it, and understanding the reasons behind every choice, can be just as rewarding.

Buying the gear alone will not make you an ultralight hiker. True mastery comes from experience, creativity, and good judgment. Each decision you make on the trail, from what to bring to what to leave behind, shapes your independence and confidence.

Things will not always go as planned, and that is when ultralight hiking truly begins. You may find yourself asking, Do I really need this item? Could I make this setup even lighter? Those questions are signs that your next journey has already begun.

At Yamatomichi, our HLC programs help you understand ultralight hiking at its core. Our Basic course is the perfect place to start, where you can explore ideas, techniques, and experiences with fellow hikers. Together, you will share discoveries, gain new perspectives, and deepen your understanding of what it means to hike light.
