Introduction

UL Shirt with pockets

A pocketed version of the UL Shirt, which can be worn as both an active layer or a wind shell.

The fit is roomier than the UL Shirt, while the silhouette remains clean even when wearing a backpack. The two chest pockets—measuring 14.5 cm × 17 cm (Size M)—are positioned to avoid interference with backpack straps, making it easy to take items in and out while hiking.

The wide fit and open collar help release heat and stay comfortable on hot days. Snap buttons allow you to quickly open the front for ventilation, or raise the collar and fasten it when it’s cold—giving you flexible control over wind protection and perceived temperature.

Product story

A Four-year journey

Conversation: Akira Natsume (Yamatomichi Founder) × Hirotomo Hirono (Pattern Maker)

Designing a shirt that carries large, practical pockets and a relaxed silhouette, yet stays clean under a backpack, was no easy task. Here, founder Akira and pattern maker Hirotomo look back on the process that brought it to life.

Akira: In our Trail Shirt series, including the UL Shirt, we deliberately avoided adding pockets. Customers often asked for them, but at the time we prioritized lightness above all. Adding pockets would reduce the breathability and blur the concept we were pursuing, so we resisted the idea for years.

But time has passed since the UL Shirt’s release, and I began to feel it was time to offer something different. That’s when we decided to take on the challenge of making a pocketed version of the shirt.

Hirotomo: Yamatomichi products have always been defined by simplicity — lightweight materials and a clear concept. At first, the idea of adding pockets to a shirt seemed to go against that spirit. But over time, I found myself drawn to the practicality they offered. I also knew that Akira had been wrestling with this dilemma for years.

Small pockets would only serve as decoration, while adding flaps or zippers risked complicating the design. To find the right approach, Akira and I built prototype after prototype, trying different fabrics and pocket styles, often abandoning them along the way. Looking back, those abandoned attempts became essential groundwork for what eventually emerged.

Akira: From the outset of revisiting the UL Big Pocket Shirt, the decision was clear: two large chest pockets would be part of the design. What wasn’t clear was how long the journey would take. Four years passed between that decision and the product’s release came far longer than expected.

Hirotomo: As with many of our projects, this one certainty took time. To reach the point of “this is it” required patience and iteration.

Akira: The biggest challenge was ensuring the silhouette remained elegant. We wanted something with a new pattern altogether, and so began experimenting with big-silhouette concepts.

Hirotomo: Because of the large pocket size, balance was everything. A shirt designed in the usual way would never work. The pattern had to be reimagined from scratch, and at times the prototypes looked more like jackets than shirts. It was an endless cycle of trial and adjustment

Akira: When the samples were finally tested in the field, the practicality of the pockets was undeniable. Having maps, tickets, or small items at hand proved surprisingly useful — both on the trail and while traveling.

Hirotomo: Pocket placement became another puzzle. They needed to sit low enough to be accessible even with a sternum strap fastened, but not so low that they disrupted the design. Countless adjustments were made before it felt right.

Akira: What took the most time, however, was the silhouette. Early prototypes had a big, relaxed shape that looked fine on its own but collapsed under the weight of a backpack. That wasn’t acceptable. Yamatomichi makes gear for hiking, and a shirt should look as good with a pack on as without. That realization set us on a new path: how to preserve the wide look while keeping the lines sharp with a pack.

Hirotomo: It wasn’t about simply adding fabric. If it looked like someone had just gone up a size, the concept would be lost. The shirt’s very structure had to be reconsidered. The final solution gave the upper chest a light, airy feel for ventilation, while tapering toward the hem for a clean finish.

Akira: Throughout the process, we reminded each other of the goal: to create a shirt unlike anything that had existed before.

Hirotomo: It was an ambitious challenge, and the results reflect that. The silhouette that emerged was something entirely new. Sleeve lengths, measurements, and comfort were refined again and again, until the balance was right.

Akira: There were at least three moments when I believed the shirt was complete, only to return to the drawing board. By the time it truly felt finished, four years had slipped by.

Hirotomo: The result isn’t a “big silhouette shirt” in the usual sense, nor is it oversized by the numbers. But when worn, it carries a sense of volume, while still allowing a backpack to sit cleanly and look sharp. Achieving that balance was a moment of real satisfaction, proof that the long process had been worthwhile. And yet, even now, it feels like the journey may not be over.

Akira: (Nods in agreement) Perhaps it isn’t.

Form and function

Two large pockets

Spacious enough to hold trail maps, a notebook, a hand towel, or even a pack of cigarettes, the dual chest pockets keep small essentials within easy reach. The lightweight fabric makes them ideal for lighter items, though heavier objects like a wallet or snacks should be carried with care.

Refined wide silhouette

Cut with extra room at the shoulders and arms and tapered toward the hem, the shirt offers the ease of a wide silhouette while holding a crisp, balanced line. Even under a backpack, the shape stays streamlined and composed.

Lighter than a T-shirt

At only 68g (size XS), we’ve created a shirt that is lighter than a T-shirt. The fabric uses the strong but ultralight Teijin Shadow Rip, only weighing about 56g/㎡, achieving both breathability and durability.

Trail shirt

Woven fabrics are used in many shirts for a reason. Compared to knit fabrics of the same material and weight, their tighter structure offers better wind resistance, faster drying, and greater durability.

At Yamatomichi, we see the essence of a functional shirt in two things: the wind protection of woven fabric, and the easy ventilation of a button-front design. Built around those qualities, our Trail Shirt is a shirt made for hiking.

There are many moments in the mountains—such as in strong winds or during chilly early mornings and evenings—when you want extra warmth around your neck. That’s why, as an original Yamatomichi feature, the collar can be raised and fastened with a button.

An open-collared shirt offers good ventilation.

Snap buttons allow for speedy opening and closing while on the move.

The hem has slits on both sides, while the tail is slightly longer in the back than the front.

Wrinkle-proof

Even after tightly shoved into a backpack or squished into a pocket, the UL Big Pocket Shirt made of Shadow Rip rarely wrinkles and is always ready to be worn.

Super compact

The shirt is so compact it fits in the palm of your hand when folded, making it perfect as a change of clothes when hiking or traveling.

Super fast-drying

UL Big Pocket Short Sleeve Shirt is as fast-drying as the highly wicking base layers.

We compared the moisture content remaining in the fabric 15 minutes after spin-drying between Shadow Rip, major base layers from other brands, Yamatomichi’s merino wool, and a typical cotton shirt. Lower moisture content indicates faster drying performance.

*The UV protection rating of the Bamboo Shirt is based on its maximum measured value.

  • Moisture regulation – Maintains balanced humidity inside the garment: dry and breathable in humid conditions, comfortably moist when dry.
  • Breathability – Higher values mean better ventilation; lower values offer better wind resistance.
  • UV protection – The ability to block ultraviolet rays from sunlight.

Material

Shadow Rip: lightweight, strong, durable

In the mountains, where sudden weather changes, sharp temperature swings, gusting winds, and harsh sun are the norm, gear must balance two opposing qualities: breathability and wind resistance. Teijin Frontier’s Shadow Rip fabric meets these demands while also combining light weight with strength.

Most thin, lightweight fabrics rely on a ripstop structure, weaving thick threads in a grid to add durability. But traditional ripstop creates a textured surface, which can snag easily and wear down over time.

Shadow Rip uses fine, high-strength yarns woven into a flat, even surface. The result is a fabric that stays light and strong while resisting snagging and abrasion. It also has a soft handfeel that resists wrinkling and reduces pilling.

With a UPF rating of 30* or higher, Shadow Rip also provides reliable sun protection.

*UPF values vary by color.
