Introduction

Ultralight Mittens Born from Surplus Fabric

The UL All-weather Hoody is made of an ample amount of fabric to minimize the stitches, resulting in large sheets of surplus fabric. The UL Mittens were born out of an idea to reuse this surplus fabric that was too good to throw away.

This season’s UL Mittens are made of two different types of surplus fabrics with a wide selection of colors to choose from, and we have kept the price as low as possible.

The UL Mittens are ultralight and easy to carry with only 19g in weight.

They are highly waterproof and windproof, although not completely water-resistant* since the stitches are not sealed, will serve you as functional rain mittens or wind-protection gloves.

The UL Mittens are made of surplus fabrics with a wide selection of colors to choose from, and we have kept the price as reasonable as possible.

*For seam sealing instructions, please refer to the SUPPORT.

In situations where you might often use your hands, such as on ladders or rocky ridges, it is recommended to use the UL Mittens with an inner glove. They are so light and thin that, if worn alone, the water may penetrate the fabric.

Material

Pertex Shield Air

The Pertex Shield Air is a novel fabric developed by Pertex to further improve water pressure resistance, washing resistance, and overall quality from existing nanofiber membranes.

Nanofiber membranes are net-like structures made of extremely fine polyurethane (PU) fibers that are water repellent (hydrophobic). They have a sponge-like structure with many micropores, allowing the air and moisture to pass through. This air-permeability creates exceptional comfort within the clothes.

The Pertex Shield Air is much lighter than conventional nanofiber fabrics, with a weight of 50g/㎡ to 60g/㎡. For breathability and durability, our proprietary version of Shield Air has 15 denier nylon fabric (40 denier ripstop) as the outer layer and 7 denier nylon as the inner layer. This combination makes it much lighter and more breathable than other nanofiber-based, waterproof moisture-permeable fabrics.

The Pertex Shield Pro is a polyurethane-based hydrophobic and microporous membrane. The “hydrophobic” material has high water repellency, and the “microporous” means that it has a number of very small holes (pores).

These pores are too small for liquid water (rain) to enter, but large enough for vapor (moisture from your body) to leave. Pertex Shield Pro effectively vents the moisture within the clothes from the pores, achieving superior breathability.

According to our test at our Yamatomichi Lab, Pertex Shield Pro prevents excessive temperature rise even during heavy exercise, while keeping a constant temperature when it rapidly gets cold. According to the information provided by the manufacturer, the Pro version is more durable than the regular Pertex Shield.

Instructions

  • Not completely waterproof.
  • The UL Mittens are made of our ultralight water-resistant, ultrathin, water-permeable fabric. Please handle them with care as they can be torn or ripped when rubbed against rocks or poked by branches.
  • The UL Mittens are comfortable when you are on the move in a relatively warm environment. However, it is less warm than normal gloves so we strongly recommend you wear wool inner gloves to keep you warm especially when severe weather is to be expected.
  • In order to maximize the moisture-permeability of the two materials, after-use care is necessary. The performances of the membrane, facing and lining can be impaired by dirt, sweat, skin oils, or other substances. Please follow the washing instructions of each product to properly wash, dry, and keep clean. The use of rainwear-specific detergent is highly recommended. The water-permeability is hindered as the water repellency is declined. The water repellency can be restored by applying the heat of a tumble dryer at low-temperature or a hairdryer. Use of a water repellent agent is recommended if it is not restored by the heat of the dryer.
  • The Pertex Shield Pro uses ultralight and thin microporous material. Vaseline, insect repellent, and ethanol-containing substances such as hair creams, cosmetics, and sunscreens may stain the fabric. They may also hinder the water-permeability of the fabric. Seam Sealing

The UL Mittens are made of waterproof material. However, to make your Mittens fully waterproof, the seams must be sealed by yourself.

Seam Sealing

  • We recommend Gear Aid’s “Seam Grip + WP” due to its high resistance to water and deterioration. It is a typical seam sealer glue that comes with a brush for application. Please use the brush to seam seal the Mittens is recommended. A spatula or cotton swab can be a substitute for the brush.

  • Stuffing the Mittens will make it easier to apply on curved areas such as the fingertips. In the photo, the body of the Mitten is stuffed with bubble wrap and the thumb with some tissue paper. It will be easier to apply the sealer when it is fully stuffed with the cord lock tightened.

  • The seam sealer can be applied on either the outer or inner seams, but application on the outer side is recommended for the following reasons: The inside of the mittens has a seam allowance, so if applied on the inside, it can be sticky and annoying even after the sealer is dry when in direct contact with skin. Also, application on the outer side enhances the water resistance. Apply the agent generously. Do not spread it widely. It will look nice if applied thinly along with the stitch, but it is better to apply it as thick as the width of the brush that comes with “Seam Grip + WP” for better water resistance. After application, let it dry for about 8 hours.
