Yamatomichi HLC
2026 Programs & Activities
We are pleased to announce the 2026 program lineup for Yamatomichi HLC.
This year brings an important update. The Intro to Ultralight Hiking lecture, which has served as the gateway program for HLC participants, will move online beginning in 2026 and will be available to take at any time. As a result, in-person introductory lectures will no longer be held in each region, with the exception of Taiwan.
Completion of the introductory lecture will continue to be required for participation in HLC workshops and selected programs. By offering the lecture online, we hope to make it easier for those who previously found it difficult to attend due to time or location constraints to join the HLC community.
Another theme for 2026 is community. Across all programs, HLC ambassadors will take on a stronger role as facilitators, helping to create spaces where participants can learn from one another and share their experiences more openly.
Programs labeled Meetup are especially designed to encourage these connections. They welcome hikers of all experience levels—from complete beginners to seasoned mountain travelers—and provide a place where people can gather simply through a shared interest in hiking.
“HLC” stands for HIKE, LIFE, COMMUNITY.
Through these programs, we hope to continue exploring how hiking, daily life, and human connection can support and enrich one another.
We look forward to seeing you in the field in 2026.
Hideki Toyoshima / Yamatomichi HLC Project Director
HLC Hokkaido
HLC Hokkaido enters a new chapter in 2026.
Founding ambassador Toge steps down this year, and second-generation ambassador Shingo Numata—who also runs the outdoor gear brand MUNIEQ—brings his own perspective to the program.
One of the highlights of the year is the launch of a three-part MYOG (Make Your Own Gear) series, in which participants will spend six months completing a backpack kit together. The PRACTICE program also raises the bar with a demanding three-day circuit around Lake Kussharo, completed with a base weight of under 4kg.
The program will also explore the local outdoor culture of Hokkaido, including a LOCAL STUDY HIKING session focused on the history of the legendary outdoor shop Shuukousha.
A Message from Shingo, HLC Hokkaido Ambassador
As HLC Hokkaido enters its seventh year, one of the highlights of this season is the full launch of our MYOG program. Over three sessions spanning half a year, participants will complete a backpack kit while experiencing the process of designing and making gear themselves.
Our workshops will again take place in fields close to urban areas, making them accessible to many hikers. For PRACTICE, we’ve set a challenging course: approximately 75km around Lake Kussharo with a base weight under 4kg. It’s a perfect next step for those who have completed the workshops and want to push their hiking further.
Let’s continue building the Hokkaido hiking community together in 2026.

Yamatomichi HLC Hokkaido Ambassador / Founder of MUNIEQ
At age 20, Shingo was deeply moved by the spectacular scenery of Yosemite, which sparked his passion for the outdoors. Drawing on both his background in mechanical engineering and his love of outdoor life, he joined a bicycle parts manufacturer after university, then went on to design tools for making better coffee outdoors. In 2016, he founded the outdoor gear brand MUNIEQ. Around the same time, he began running, which gradually led him into trail running and more frequent time in the mountains. He has participated in HLC Hokkaido since its first year, moving seamlessly between trail running and hiking in the snow-free seasons, and enjoying snowboarding in winter.

At age 20, Shingo visited Yosemite and was deeply moved by its landscapes, sparking his lifelong passion for the outdoors. After studying mechanical engineering, he worked for a bicycle parts manufacturer before founding the outdoor gear brand MUNIEQ in 2016. Around the same time he began running, which gradually led him to trail running and frequent mountain trips. Since the first year of HLC Hokkaido, he has been an active participant in the program.
HLC Tohoku
Expanding the field together with the community
With founding ambassador Ueno stepping down and second-generation ambassador Koji Kurinami taking up the baton, HLC Tohoku enters a new chapter while keeping the warm, family-like atmosphere that has been cultivated over the years.
This year’s programs are designed so that beginners and experienced hikers alike can learn from one another. The GUEST SEMINAR will feature an HLC Tohoku participant who thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, sharing stories from a 4,000km journey across the United States. There will also be a LOCAL STUDY HIKING program with the founder of the Bandai-Azuma-Adatara Volcano Trail as guest.
Together with the local community, HLC Tohoku will continue deepening its understanding of place and broadening the perspective of hiking in the region.
A Message from Koji Kurinami
Yamatomichi HLC Tohoku Ambassador
It has now been one year since I became an ambassador. During that time I’ve had the opportunity to meet many hikers—not only from across Tohoku, but also from the Kanto area. With so many first-time participants joining us, I feel that the HLC Tohoku community is steadily growing.
For 2026 we’ve prepared a variety of programs, from accessible entry points for beginners to more challenging experiences for hikers who want to go further.
I hope you’ll enjoy HLC Tohoku with us again this year.

Yamatomichi HLC Tohoku Ambassador / Farm Director at Sukerokuen
Born in 1977 in Saitama Prefecture and now based in Takizawa, Iwate, Koji previously worked in fitness club management and was transferred around Japan. After experiencing the Great East Japan Earthquake, he became acutely aware of the importance of food, left the corporate world, relocated, and shifted into farming. His encounter with the Michinoku Coastal Trail led him to HLC Tohoku, where he met fellow community members and soon found himself going to the mountains almost every week. Immersed in hiking, he came to feel strongly that he wanted to share that excitement with more people. Today, he works to share the freedom, connection to nature, and bonds with others that he discovered through ultralight hiking.

An outdoor shop in Shiwa, Iwate, surrounded by rich fields such as Hachimantai, Mt. Iwate, and the Kitakami Highlands. The store carries gear for hiking, trail running, and backcountry activities. The name “Knotty” comes from the knot in a rope, and true to that spirit, regulars are always dropping by — making it a real knot in the Tohoku outdoor community. Owner and founding HLC Tohoku ambassador Ueno, together with his wife Akiko, often head out with customers for running, snowboarding, and other activities even outside shop hours.
HLC North Kanto
Expanding possibilities through gear and route-making
HLC North Kanto’s MYOG community, which began in 2024, continues to grow. In 2026, the program broadens its focus from making gear to making routes.
In the workshop-style program Make Your Own Trail, participants will rediscover the appeal of their local area and develop the ability to imagine and design the routes they want to walk. PRACTICE will take place in the Kanto area, where participants will challenge themselves to create and hike routes in a distinctly ultralight style.
In addition, HLC Project Director Toyoshima will lead Hidekichi’s Introduction to Ultralight Living, opening up the possibilities of hiking through the lens of LIFE as well.
A Message from Tomoyuki Meguriya, HLC North Kanto Ambassador
Yamatomichi HLC North Kanto Ambassador
HLC is now in its eighth year, and each area’s individuality has become more distinct. This year too, I hope we can continue exploring the possibilities of hiking together from many different angles, with a sense of excitement.
This year, Intro to MYOG will also be held in HLC Tohoku, helping spread the ideas and community around MYOG across the country. We’ll also host a seminar featuring HLC Director Toyoshima. His way of thinking about lighter living left a strong impression on me, and I hope participants will discover how that perspective can enrich everyday life as well as time in the mountains.
Participants from outside North Kanto are more than welcome. Let’s keep drawing our own trails lightly and freely in 2026.

Yamatomichi HLC North Kanto Ambassador / Staff at LUNETTES
Tomoyuki began climbing after being deeply affected by an experience on Mt. Nasu with a friend when he was 20. He encountered ultralight culture through the Yamatomichi Sacoche, and around the same time became fascinated by MYOG, discovering the pleasure of going into the mountains with gear he had made himself. After leaving a camera manufacturer, he joined the staff at LUNETTES. In addition to hiking, he is also passionate about fly fishing and telemark skiing.

A select shop in Nasushiobara, Tochigi, that deals in both clothing and mountain gear. At first glance, it appears to be two separate stores, but they are connected inside. LUNETTES proposes clothing that can lift your mood and become a trigger for discovering a different side of yourself, while next door is Yama no Dougu-ya, an outdoor shop built around the concept of ultralight hiking. The store’s shape grew naturally out of Kuroiso’s environment, where mountains, rivers, and ski fields are all close at hand. Owner Takeshi Mito and staff member Tomoyuki Meguriya — also the HLC North Kanto ambassador — know the Nasu field intimately, so if you’re hiking, skiing, or fly fishing in the area, be sure to stop by.
HLC Kamakura
A broad range of programs
Based in Yamatomichi’s home town of Kamakura, HLC Kamakura will once again offer the widest and most varied lineup of programs in 2026. The BASIC category alone will include five field workshops, creating more opportunities for people to join and learn the foundations of ultralight hiking.
The program will also feature its first-ever fastpacking trip on the Amatomi Trail, as well as a joint meetup with HLC Taiwan. From programs that deepen knowledge of Kamakura’s local field to longer adventures reaching into Nagano and Niigata, ambassadors Oji Sonoda and Hidenori Maehara, together with the Yamatomichi Kamakura staff, hope to create more opportunities for people to encounter and learn through hiking.
A Message from Oji Sonoda, HLC Kamakura Ambassador
Yamatomichi HLC Kamakura Ambassador
Hiking lightly is not only about reducing weight. It’s also about thinking for yourself about how to engage with the mountains and how you want to walk through them. As a place to put that into practice, HLC Kamakura in 2026 will offer a wide variety of fields and challenges.
From this year, we Yamatomichi staff will also take part as ambassadors, sharing the appeal of this style of hiking through direct experience. Along with LOCAL STUDY HIKING programs that walk Kamakura’s satoyama and trace its history, we’ll also host a joint international meetup where hikers from Taiwan and Japan gather across borders.
We’ll take on one-night, two-day fastpacking on the Amatomi Trail and a 120km PRACTICE on the Shin-etsu Trail. We’ve also increased the number of BASIC workshops. I hope these programs become a chance for you to take your next step through walking, testing, and challenging yourself. Let’s walk together.

Yamatomichi HLC Kamakura Ambassador / Store Manager, Yamatomichi Kamakura
Originally from Osaka, Oji moved to Kamakura in 2017. After working as a book planner and editor for an art publisher, he became independent. He now wears many hats, including Yamatomichi Kamakura staff, company representative, editor, farmer, and hunter, treating what others might call “work” as an extension of his own life’s pursuits. He encountered Tomoya Tsuchiya’s book Ultralight Hiking in 2011 and has practiced an ultralight style of mountain walking ever since, integrating it into his lifestyle and continuing to enjoy the mountains and nature through it.

Yamatomichi HLC Kamakura Ambassador / Yamatomichi Staff
Hidenori grew up in rural Hokkaido. After working for five years as a physical therapist in an orthopedic clinic, he became a mountain hut caretaker in the Northern Alps. In 2019, wanting to fully immerse himself in nature, he and his wife walked New Zealand’s long trail Te Araroa. Moving repeatedly between towns and nature while living a simple cycle of walking, eating, and sleeping for four months led him to discover the hiking style that suited him best — and drew him deeply into ultralight hiking. He continues to study ultralight hiking culture as a way of reducing stress on both the body and the environment, so he can remain an active hiker into old age.

A flagship store in Zaimokuza, Kamakura, opened in 2022 in a renovated former Yamatomichi Lab. Staffed by experienced Yamatomichi hikers with deep knowledge of both the products and hiking, the store offers not only product fitting but also advice on packing, layering, and lightening your gear. With both mountains and sea just a short walk away, it is also a place where you can feel nature close at hand.
HLC Hokuriku
Digging into the local community and creating hiking culture
With its growing community, HLC Hokuriku will further broaden its range of programs in 2026, drawing on ambassador Riku Yamamoto’s distinctive style.
There will be three meetups focused on connection. Map Reading & Navigation for Ultralight Hikers will explore ways of thinking about route creation that make moving through the mountains more freely. BASIC workshops will again follow routes linking sections of the Hokuriku Nature Trail, offering rewarding journeys on foot.
In winter, HLC Hokuriku will also host snow hiking programs unique to this snowy region, introducing the pleasure of using skis as a means of travel.
A Message from Riku Yamamoto, HLC Hokuriku Ambassador
Yamatomichi HLC Hokuriku Ambassador
HLC Hokuriku is entering its third year. Not only within Hokuriku, but also from neighboring regions such as Kansai and Tokai, more hikers have started joining us, and although it has been gradual, I feel strongly that the community is steadily growing.
This year too, we plan to hold programs that draw on what makes Hokuriku unique, centered around Mt. Hakusan and the Hokuriku Nature Trail. The theme of PRACTICE is a traverse of the Northern Alps. If you want to take on a more creative form of hiking, I hope you’ll join us. We’re also planning our first-ever three-area joint meetup with HLC Kansai and HLC Shikoku.
Let’s create a mountain culture unique to Hokuriku together through HLC Hokuriku.

Yamatomichi HLC Hokuriku Ambassador / Store Manager, THE GATE MOUNTAIN
In his early twenties, Riku became immersed in mountains and the outdoors after being casually invited to try trail running by a colleague. In 2017, during a journey hiking around Japan, he met the Yamatomichi team in Hokkaido on an HLC tour and was deeply inspired by ultralight culture and its community. After finishing the journey, he helped launch THE GATE and THE GATE MOUNTAIN, where he now shares the appeal of the mountains as a shop staff member. Centered on the fields of Fukui and Hokuriku, he enjoys hiking and trail running in spring, summer, and autumn, and telemark skiing in winter.

A specialty store focused on mountain activities such as hiking and trail running, operated in collaboration with Fukui-based outdoor select shop THE GATE. As a gateway into the mountains, it supports not only beginners getting started but also intermediate and advanced hikers looking to take the next step. In addition to selling gear, the store actively runs community spaces and field programs. Store manager Yamamoto, who also serves as HLC Hokuriku ambassador, works closely with the local community while helping shape a mountain culture rooted in Fukui and Hokuriku.
HLC Kansai
A diverse lineup from the western center of HLC
Operating around Mountain Gear Taninokisha and Yamatomichi Kyoto, HLC Kansai continues in 2026 as a central western hub of HLC, with ambassador Yuji Nakagawa and the Yamatomichi Kyoto staff working together to create a broad range of programs — from shop-based gatherings to demanding field practice.
In June, HLC Kansai will host Everyone’s Mountain Trip Report Meeting for the first time. Out of the connections formed there, participants will head into the mountains together, with another chance to share those experiences in December.
A GUEST SEMINAR with Hikers Depot’s Tomoya Tsuchiya will also invite participants to walk the Tokai Nature Trail together while considering the appeal and potential of long-distance nature trails.
A Message from Yuji Nakagawa, HLC Kansai Ambassador
Yamatomichi HLC Kansai Ambassador
The 2026 programs have all been released at once. In HLC Kansai, we’ve prepared a variety of plans — from our first-ever MYOG workshop at the Yamatomichi Toyooka Factory, to spaces where participants can speak freely, to experiential hikes where we learn together with invited guests. I hope these programs can be used as opportunities to build new community and open up new activities.
Our annual joint meetup with HLC Shikoku will grow this year with HLC Hokuriku joining as well. Just imagining it is exciting. And for those who like a high-intensity challenge, I highly recommend the PRACTICE program on the Omine Okugakemichi.
I hope you’ll consider joining us.

Yamatomichi HLC Kansai Ambassador / Owner of Mountain Gear Taninokisha
Wandering with a camera in hand, Yuji became fascinated by the cultures and lifeways of mountain peoples in Tibet, the Karakoram, and Ladakh, as well as the overwhelming landscapes they inhabit. While running an apparel company connected to handcrafts from across Asia and the Middle East, he opened Mountain Gear Taninokisha in April 2020. Making full use of his mobility, he loves dashing through fields in ultralight style and camping out with a glass of hard liquor in hand. His nickname is “Kinnikun.”

A mountain gear shop in Tanimachi, Osaka, specializing in ultralight hiking and fastpacking. Through its large glass entrance, you can see a magnificent camphor tree, giving the shop a fresh atmosphere despite its urban setting. Carefully selected ultralight items line the store, attracting everyone from beginners to veterans. Owner Nakagawa, who also serves as HLC Kansai ambassador, knows the mountains of Kansai — including Rokko, Hira, and the Kii range — in depth, and can share routes well-suited to ultralight hiking and fastpacking.

Opened in April 2023 in Gojo, Kyoto, as a direct Yamatomichi store. In addition to carrying the Yamatomichi lineup, the shop hosts events, stocks hiking-related books, and includes a bottle shop selling craft beer. It aims to serve as a place for learning about hiking and for connection among hikers. Staffed by a colorful team of Yamatomichi employees, it is also a place where you can ask for advice on nearby hiking routes and gear.
HLC Shikoku
Expanding the field into Kyushu
While continuing to value its local fields, HLC Shikoku will broaden its range into Kyushu in 2026. BASIC workshops will take place in the Kuju Mountains and Bōgatsuru, while PRACTICE will challenge participants to traverse Yakushima together, thinking through the route as a group.
At Mt. Ishizuchi, ambassador Tetsu Kanno’s trail work — one of his life’s ongoing projects — will continue, along with a meetup hike that also serves as a new year gathering. In March, HLC Shikoku will host a GUEST SEMINAR with Ryuko Ono, who took Buddhist ordination in India.
Through walking, 2026 promises to be a year in which both the field and human connections continue to expand.
A Message from Tetsu Kanno, HLC Shikoku Ambassador
Yamatomichi HLC Shikoku Ambassador
In 2026, HLC Shikoku will venture beyond its usual area and hold programs in Kuju, Kyushu, and Yakushima as well. We’re also bringing back popular programs with a strong original flavor, including trail maintenance in the Ishizuchi range and bikerafting on the clear waters of the Shimanto River.
Please also look forward to the three-area joint meetup with HLC Kansai and HLC Hokuriku. And in March, we’re planning a somewhat special talk program titled Making Life Ultralight, featuring Ryuko Ono, author of A Life of Letting Go.
Centered on the Ishizuchi range but expanding outward from Shikoku to many places, the hiking community continues to grow. We’d love for you to be part of it. Let’s HLC!

Yamatomichi HLC Shikoku Ambassador / Founder of T-mountain
Tetsu runs T-mountain, a mountain gear shop at the foot of Matsuyama Castle in Shikoku. He loves all forms of mountain movement — walking, running, climbing, and sliding — and has explored not only Japan’s major ranges but also mountains overseas since his twenties. In recent years, he has felt increasingly drawn to the satoyama and nearby everyday mountains closely tied to his own life. Through his work and play, he continues to share the richness of Shikoku’s nature with the world. Mountains, rivers, and sea — he loves them all, and lately he’s especially into bikerafting.

An outdoor shop at the foot of Matsuyama Castle, the symbol of Matsuyama in Ehime, and the only retailer of Yamatomichi products in Shikoku. The store offers a rich lineup of gear specialized for hiking, trail running, and many other activities, making it irresistible to mountain and outdoor lovers. Owner Kanno — also HLC Shikoku ambassador — combines deep experience in Japan and overseas with an approachable personality, which has helped build a loyal following since the shop opened. As an Ehime local through and through, he’s also the perfect person to ask about enjoying the mountains of the region.
HLC Taiwan
New perspectives emerging through diverse programs
HLC Taiwan remains the only overseas hub among Yamatomichi HLC’s eight locations. Ambassador John Lin, who introduced ultralight hiking to Taiwan, and Taipei-based HLC Place samplus have worked together to nurture the community.
In 2026, the lineup expands further with GUEST SEMINAR and AMBASSADOR’S SIGNATURE programs, making this a year in which participants can learn and practice hiking from a wider range of perspectives. A joint meetup hike with HLC Kamakura is also planned in Japan in June.
Through programs that broaden both the field and the point of view, HLC Taiwan will continue deepening the ways this style of hiking can be enjoyed.
A Message from John Lin, HLC Taiwan Ambassador
Yamatomichi HLC Taiwan Ambassador
HLC Taiwan is about to enter its fifth year. A new year comes around so quickly, and I imagine everyone’s days are just as busy.
This year, in addition to the day programs that have been well received so far, we’ll welcome Professor Wu Yuan-He, a specialist in history and culture, for a new GUEST SEMINAR focused on Taiwan’s oldest mountain hut and the story behind it. We’ll also cross the sea for the first time and hold a joint workshop with HLC Kamakura. I’m very excited to see what kind of chemistry will emerge from that.
Lighter hiking, lighter living. Let’s enjoy HLC Taiwan together in 2026.

After studying Western mountaineering techniques at the Yamnuska Mountain Skills Semester in Canada, John returned to Taiwan and founded Miasan Outdoor Center. He teaches hiking and snow mountaineering, manages mountain huts, and has spent more than 20 years learning ways of living closer to nature from the Bunun people of Taiwan. He also has deep knowledge of permaculture and satoyama life.

Samplus is a specialty hiking gear store produced by Taipei select shop COW Records, and also serves as Yamatomichi’s base in Taiwan with a wide range of Yamatomichi products. In addition to running events, the store actively shares hiking information about Taiwan and also supports hikers with permit applications. It aims to become a bridge connecting hikers in Taiwan with Japan and the wider world.
