From sweaty climbs and windswept ridgelines to pouring rain, the UL All-weather Series keeps you moving through changing weather.
Made entirely from ultra-thin Pertex Shield Air, the UL All-weather Coat is significantly lighter and more breathable than conventional air-permeable waterproof shells. The airflow is so exceptional that it feels more like a fully waterproof wind shell than traditional rainwear.
Its clean, below-the-knee silhouette provides extra protection from wind and rain. A large packable front pocket, two-way zipper for ventilation, and side slits for easy access to the pockets underneath make it equally comfortable on the trail and around town.

Intriguing New Gear
The UL All-weather series is quite different from your regular rainwear.
It’s best to think of it as a new category of gear altogether. Some caution is needed when using, but if used right it will take you even further.

I first heard about Pertex Shield Air, the material adopted for the UL-All-weather series, about three years ago. At the time, we were conducting research on rainwear at the Yamatomichi Lab. Interested in our research results, Pertex contacted us and provided us with sample fabrics of the Pertex Shield Air before it was officially released.
Initially, I thought that with Pertex Shield Air I could make new rainwear that was simply lighter and more breathable than the NeoShell (an air/moisture-permeable waterproof fabric).
However, the potential for the fabric was far more profound than that. During a field test I conducted at Taisetsuzan Hokkaido at the end of August, I realized that there was a need to differentiate this amazing fabric from traditional rainwear.
There are no trees on the ridges of Taisetsuzan in Hokkaido, and no place to take refuge. In this environment, with strong winds and light rain, I wore a prototype jacket using Pertex Shield Air and was pleased with the comfort and dryness it provided in active situations. However, I noticed that my body heat was immediately ventilated outside during my breaks.
Rainwear is usually known to protect you from the wind and is able to somewhat retain body heat. The All-weather series is different. It is as if the jacket is telling you “Don’t stop moving!” We can’t deny the benefits it brings in terms of dryness, and breathability, but we also cannot deny the lack of heat retention when resting. In other words, it is difficult to keep warm with this garment alone, especially in bad weather.
To be honest, I was a bit worried. I thought that if the wearer used this fabric without knowing its flaws, it could be truly dangerous.
For ages, I have been wishing for rainwear that could be worn at all times, and rainwear that had a little bit more breathability. I went as far as thinking that fabrics that weren’t breathable were no good. But that was not the case. Excellent breathability will vent the heat out but will lead to less heat retention in bad weather. On the contrary, rainwear with high thermal insulation tends to trap heat and become stuffy during activities.
While it excites me that the gear I wanted to take shape, I also worried at times. I’ve come to realize that the Pertex Shield Pro, the fabric used for our UL Rain series, has a good balance of warmth and breathability.
But in the end, I decided to release this product because I was thrilled that the answer I had been seeking for many years had finally taken shape and because I truly felt from the bottom of my heart that this fabric would make very interesting gear.
Choosing the right gear may differ depending on its purpose. There is no doubt that this is a garment that active hikers and trail runners have been on the lookout for many years, but it may not be the best fit for those who are not looking to stay highly active while hiking.
To conclude, I could have used a lighter material, but since I decided to use the name “All-weather,” I wanted to maintain a certain level of durability and strength, as well as a sense of elasticity, so I was particular about the combination of outer and inner fabrics for the garment. Ultrasonic welding has also evolved.
At first glance, you may think, “What’s changed from the UL Rain series?”
But trust me, they are very different.

Form and function
A new category: All-weather activewear
Rainwear keeps rain out, but it also traps heat. The harder you move, the faster it gets clammy—so when the rain stops, you take it off.
Wind shells are light and breathable, but they are not built for real rain.
For years, hikers had to choose between the two: protection or breathability.
Nanofiber membranes changed that. By allowing air to pass through while keeping water out, they made it possible to create a shell that stays comfortable across changing conditions—not just when it rains.
This is not simply rainwear, and it is not simply a wind shell. It is a new category built for movement in all weather: all-weather activewear.
Compared to general hiking rainwear
The UL All-weather Coat is not trying to be a conventional rain shell.
Compared to typical 200–300g waterproof-breathable hiking rainwear, it puts greater emphasis on lightness, air permeability, and comfort in motion. The tradeoff is lower heat retention and lower water resistance than heavier rainwear, so layering and conditions still matter.
At 120g (Size S), its strength is clear: real weather protection in a super-light shell built to stay on through changing weather.
Built to breathe
Pertex Shield Air does more than release moisture. It lets air move through the fabric.
That is what gives the UL All-weather series its signature open, airy feel — the sense that heat is not trapped inside, but constantly escaping as you move.
The difference is in the nanofiber structure. While most waterproof-breathable membranes are film-based, Shield Air is built from ultrafine fibers layered like a web. The microscopic gaps between those fibers create pathways for air, physically releasing heat from inside the shell.
Using test equipment, we compared the air permeability of Pertex Shield Air with Pertex Shield, a standard hydrophilic non-porous waterproof-breathable fabric.
Each fabric was set into the testing device with water above it and air below. When air was pumped in from underneath, any air passing through the fabric appeared as bubbles in the water. More bubbles meant more airflow.
Pertex Shield, which is not air permeable, produced no bubbles. Pertex Shield Air produced a steady stream of them — a clear visual proof of its breathability.
Large Pocket
The large pocket can hold snacks, maps, and other essential items for hiking. It is placed at the front where the usability of the sternum strap is not compromised.
Packable
The Coat can be neatly packed in the large front pocket.
- Lie the coat with the front facing down.
- Fold it in half, and align with the edge of the pocket.
- Fold the sleeves.
- Fold the left side to make the width slightly narrower than the pocket.
- Fold the bottom of the coat to meet the bottom edge of the pocket.
- Fold the top of the coat to meet the top edge of the pocket, making it the same size* as the pocket.
- Turn the pocket over and tuck the folded garment in the pocket.
*TIPS: Fold it slightly smaller than the pocket.
Two-way zipper
The UL All-weather Coat’s two-way zipper opens from either end for quick ventilation—handy when you’re heating up but need to keep moving.
Slits for pocket access
Both sides have deep slits for easy wearing, which allow for direct access to your pants/shorts pockets.
The Coat is especially convenient if worn together with our 5-pocket series pants/shorts, and all five pockets can be directly accessed from the slits.
Advanced ultrasonic welding
Rainwear seams are usually sealed from the inside with seam tape, but over time, that tape can peel or weaken, creating a risk of water entering through the seams.
For the UL All-weather Hoody, we use ultrasonic welding instead. This process uses ultrasonic vibration to generate heat, melting and bonding the fabric without needle holes. It causes less damage to the fabric and helps reduce the risk of water entering through the seams after years of use.
Only a limited number of factories in Japan can perform ultrasonic welding at this level of precision. At our partner factory in Akita Prefecture, years of research and refinement have made it possible to combine the strength and waterproofness needed for hard use in the mountains.
Details
Wear the hood with the adjuster under your chin to help prevent rain from entering the shell.

The side double zipper accelerates the bottom ventilation.
YKK No.3 water-resistant Vislon double zipper has a matte texture and can be opened and closed from both above and below.
Adjusting the hood
To adjust the hood, press the cord lock hidden inside of the hood fabric and pull the cord.
UL All-weather Series
The UL All-weather series offers a range of rainwear options to match how you move on the trail. Whether you want the lightest setup possible, flexible ventilation with pit zips and double zippers, extended coverage, or easy adjustment while on the move, the lineup lets you choose the balance that works best for your style.
The UL All-weather Hoody 2025 and Pants 2025 are previous-generation Pertex Shield Air models. They are still highly capable pieces of trail rainwear, and are now available at a reduced price.
The UL All-weather Long Hoody and Coat will continue to use Pertex Shield Air exclusively.

Layering
Layering methods
Most rainwear provides a certain level of warmth by allowing moisture to build up inside the jacket. However, the UL All-weather series offers overwhelming breathability, which means the heat your body generates is continuously ventilated. Because of this, you’ll need to get creative with your layering when focusing on warmth, especially during rest periods.
To help, we’ve gathered layering suggestions for the All-weather series from Tomoya Tsuchiya (Hikers Depot), Kei Kuwabara (Run boys! A UL hiker’s classic, a sil-nylon poncho but not as rain gear, but as an extra layer to improve warmth. The combination of rain gear and rain gear may seem odd at first glance, but it is a rational layering that uses the lightweight poncho to compensate for the lack of warmth of the highly-breathable All-weather jacket.

Watanabe is a runner who likes high-intensity trail running. When layering over short sleeves, no matter how breathable the all-weather material is, the arms that are in direct contact with the bare skin can feel uncomfortable and cold due to sweat clinging to them, which can be eliminated by wearing arm covers.

The moisture-wicking Yamatomichi Merino Hoody as an inner layer, combined with the breathable Polartec Alpha Haramaki wrapped around the stomach, allows you to prevent overheating, while also preventing cold sweats, especially at night or in bad weather.

Material
Pertex Shield Air
Pertex Shield Air pushes nanofiber membrane technology further, improving water resistance, wash durability, and overall consistency.
Its hydrophobic polyurethane resin is layered into a fine, web-like structure. Unlike conventional waterproof-breathable materials, it does more than let moisture vapor escape—it allows air itself to move through. That physical airflow is what creates its exceptionally open, airy feel.
To make the most of this breathability, Yamatomichi uses 15-denier outer fabric with a 40-denier ripstop grid, and a 7-denier lining. The result is an exceptionally light shell with outstanding airflow, even compared with shells made from other nanofiber materials.

Note before use
- This product is an ultralight waterproof shell made with extremely thin waterproof-breathable fabric. Take care to avoid damage or tearing from abrasion against rocks, snagging on branches, or similar contact.
- Regular care is required to maintain waterproof-breathable performance. Dirt, sweat, and body oils on the membrane, the DWR finish, or the inner layer can reduce performance. Wash regularly according to the care label.
- Because the fabric is extremely light, thin, and porous, contact with products containing Vaseline, insect-repellent ingredients, or ethanol, such as hair cream, cosmetics, sunscreen, or insect repellent, may cause stains or reduce breathability.
Lifespan of the water repellency
Water repellency generally lasts longer on thicker fabrics because they can absorb more water-repellent treatment. The UL All-weather series, however, uses the thinnest, most breathable outer fabric possible to prioritize lightness and airflow. While the fabric has sufficient water repellency at the time of shipment, its durability is lower than that of thicker waterproof-breathable materials.
When the DWR is working properly, water beads up and rolls off the surface. As it wears down, water can spread across the fabric as a thin film, reducing breathability. This can make the inside feel damp from trapped moisture or condensation.
If water repellency starts to decline, wash the garment and apply heat with a dryer or hairdryer to help restore it. If it still does not recover, reapply a commercially available water-repellent treatment.
Dangerously breathable
This product is designed for comfort during active use in relatively mild conditions, and as such, it offers less insulation compared to standard waterproof shells or winter hard shells. For this reason, proper layering is essential during rest periods or when additional warmth is needed. Please exercise caution when using this product in harsh environments.

Instructions
Care instructions
- Machine wash cold, gentle cycle, at or below 30°C.
- Use rainwear detergent or a neutral detergent free of bleach, fabric softener, and optical brighteners.
- Wash separately or in a laundry net.
- For heavy stains, spot-clean with diluted detergent and a soft sponge. Do not scrub seams or seam tape.
- Tumble dry on low heat, up to 60°C, regularly to restore water repellency.
- Do not use fabric softener or bleach.
- Iron on low heat without steam.
- Do not dry clean.

Orders within Japan are shipped via Yamato Transport.

- Orders to North America, Oceania, and Europe are shipped via DHL. Orders to Asia, the Middle East, Central and South America, and Africa are shipped via EMS (Express Mail Service). We are currently unable to ship to Russia due to Japanese postal restrictions.
